Personal Statement
"I have long held the belief that it is an individual’s right to live with dignity. To live with dignity includes being able to die with dignity. I did not recognise the impossibility of acting on this belief in NSW  until my much loved husband died from mesothelioma without dignity and suffering intolerably, Shortly before he died he stated publicly what we both knew should not be in question. He said, “I am going to die… Surely I should be allowed to have the best death I can.”

I strongly support legislation that gives people who are of sound mind who find themselves in a terminal situation with intolerable pain and suffering the right to have the best death they can. 85% of the Australian population agree with this position. Examples of robust legislation exist around the world to provide a model for how NSW can address this community need without any of the untoward consequences raised as barriers to the legislation. It is unfair to those who are in this situation, the medical staff who assist them, the families that have to watch them die horribly and the society that values the dignity of the individual not to properly represent the will of the Australian people on assisted dying."

Despite strong public support and lobbying over many decades our elected representatives have failed to act. It's time to make them listen.
