LUKE DITCHFIELD BA (USYD) is standing as a candidate for election to the NSW Legislative Council on 23rd March 2019.
Luke is relatively new to politics, having only just completed his final Master of Management exam at USYD in February at age 23. Despite this, he has always felt strongly about the right of the individual, in particular the right to choose their own path when they are suffering a serious or terminal illness. After seeing the positive results the VEP received at the recent Wentworth by-election, Luke has been inspired to join his first political party, to help raise the profile of the VEP and the valuable work they are doing to bring legislative change.
“I have been interested in the ethical issue that is voluntary euthanasia for many years now, stemming from the harrowing experience I watched my grandfather go through when I was a teenager. In more recent years my mother has become a strong supporter of voluntary assisted dying laws, and has prompted many discussions amongst our family on how to best approach it, particularly given the declining health of her own mother.
I am firm in my belief that this legislation is for the best in our community, as it gives people the choice to end their life peacefully and before they go through excessive pain and suffering.”
