SHARON POTOCNIK is standing as a candidate for election to the NSW Legislative Council on
March 23rd 2019.

Sharon has extensive business experience in Human Resources, Safety and Quality Management and is currently a Director of a family Earthmoving Company and a volunteer for several environmental sustainability, not-for-profit groups.

Sharon is a passionate supporter of individual choice for end of life options. As a resident on the border of NSW and Victoria, Sharon has family and friends living only minutes away in a state that has already legislated to allow voluntary assisted dying and therefore is standing to progress the cause to have VAD legally available on both sides of the border.

Personal Statement
I strongly believe that forcing dying individuals to endure days, weeks or months of intolerable pain after they have decided that they want their suffering to end is inhumane. The toll on family and friends who are unable to answer their loved ones pleas or who are left traumatised by desperate suicides is immense and haunts them long after the eventual death of their loved one. Palliative care is essential, but often not enough.

I want to do much more than simply hope that voluntary assisted dying is legal by the time I need it. The only obstacle is making sure the politicians act to reflect the wishes of the majority of Australians. I am therefore putting my hand up to stand on this issue in the next election to give voters the ability to make their wishes clear.

Despite strong public support and lobbying over many decades our elected representatives have failed to act. It's time to make them listen.
